Education and Humble beginnings:
Deeply inspired to serve the nation by the Kargil War, Lucknow native Shubhanshu Shukla began his military career by joining the National Defence Academy (NDA). He then further specialized his knowledge, earning his M.Tech. from IISC Bengaluru.
IAF Career:
After joining IAF as a pilot in 2006, he quickly accumulated about 2000 hours of flight experience and is also lincensed to fly a wide range of planes from Sukhoi SU- 30 MKI, MIG 21, MIG 26, BEA Hawk and Jaguar,
Selection:
Time passed and it was 2019 when we had been shortlisted for the Institute of Aerospace Medicine for India’s Manned mission to space, Gaganyaan. A year later, he was sent to the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut training center in Star City, Russia, after which he continued his training in ISRO’s training Centre in Bengaluru. Shukla, along with Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Ajit Krishnan and Angad Pratap, were given the post of vyomanauts for the Gaganyaan mission, expected launch in 2027.
Yap❌ Info✅ on space stuff:
🐲Please don’t confuse Dragon Capsule with Dragon Movie.
Fun Fact: Age difference between ISS and Mbappe is just one month
Following the retirement of the mighty space shuttle, NASA was fully dependent on the Soyuz missions for reaching ISS. But, with the advent of the CCP(Commercial Crew Program), Musk uncle’s Dragon space capsule is used to transport astronauts and supplies to the Space station. Boeing also tried to get with its Starliner capsule, but with its Maiden mission with Sunita Williams and Barry Butch Wilmore raised questions about its safety and reliability due to a leak. Fortunately, it landed safely, saving the crew. The capsule is currently grounded for improvement for obvious reasons. Axiom Missions are private, shorter missions to the ISS and operate in partnership between Axiom Space, SpaceX and NASA.
Axiom Mission 4(Ax-4):
Axiom Mission 4 is the space mission that included Shubanshu Shukla. He was blasted on a Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral’s 39A launch pad. Although targeting June 11 as their initial date, they took off on June 25 on the Dragon Space capsule named Grace which is the fifth capsule of that type. The mission was 20 days long with 18 days spent in the ISS conducting space experiments. The crew of four included astronauts from India, Poland and Hungary which are not traditional partners for ISS. As any mission, the Dragon returned safely and touched down near San Deigo. The below list shows the crew and their country who were part of the mission showing its diversity:
🧑💼Position | 🧑🚀Astronaut | Country |
Commander | Peggy Whitson | USA(AXIOM) |
Pilot | Shubhanshu Shukla | INDIA(ISRO) |
Mission Specialist | Slawosz Uznanski Wesniewski | POLAND(POLSA) |
Mission Specialist | Tibor Kapu | HUNGARY(HSO) |
AX-4’s Significance in Indian Spaceflight:
This is the first time in more than 4 decades, a citizen of India is going to Space bearing India’s flag. This was the second time, while the first time Rakesh Sharma travelled to space in a Soyuz from Baikonur Cosmodrome.
This gave ISRO the experience on the aspects of astronaut preparedness, safety validation and mission planning.
Experiments: 🔬
ICGED and NIPGR conducted experiments of the impact of microgravity and radiation in ISS on Edible Microalgae. The effects of metabolic supplements on muscle regeneration in microgravity were observed. Sprouting of seeds was observed, which could be the changing point in human history, as it is an important protein source need while exploring the vastness of the universe. So even if you think of escaping IISC conducted experiments on how tardigrades survive and reproduce in space, while it also conducted who interaction between humans and electronic gadgets in microgravity.
For humans to have interstellar missions, we need to understand how crops function and grow in space. So, IISC and Kerala Agricultural University studied the impact of microgravity on the same topic.
Return to Earth🌎:
After spending about 18 productive days in space, Grace undocked on July 14 2025 and splashed off the coast of San Deigo a day later in the Pacific ocean thereby marking a successful mission again for SpaceX, Nasa and Axiom! 🧑🚀
